First of a breed

'First of a breed'

The Sopwith Bat-Boat first entered service with the Naval Wing of the Royal Flying Corps in 1913, just before the Admiralty re-designated it as the Royal Naval Air Service. Less than half a dozen were built with each new aircraft being slightly different from the previous one as the type was progressively modified. The version that was built to enter the 'Mortimer Singer' competition in 1913 for the first amphibian capable of both land and water-borne take off and landings is depicted in this painting. The Bat Boat won the competition resulting in an order from the German Navy.

This painting was exhibited, and sold, at the Guild of Aviation Artists Annual Exhibition held at the Mall Galleries, London, in July 2007.
